Northern vs. Southern Tanzania Safari Parks

You can experience incredible safaris in both the north and south, but which park(s) should you choose? While the Northern Safari Circuit is famous for its iconic parks and the Great Wildebeest Migration, southern Tanzania offers a quieter, more remote adventure. Both, however, are spectacular in their own way.

Northern Tanzania: Iconic wildlife and famous safari parks

Home to the world-famous Serengeti, Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks, northern Tanzania is ideal for first-time safari travellers. Here, you can witness the Great Wildebeest Migration, spot the Big Five (Serengeti & Ngorongoro) and explore the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater.

The parks are relatively easy to combine in one itinerary. So if you want to experience several wildlife destinations in a single trip, this is literally your way to go.

Southern Tanzania: Remote wilderness and fewer crowds

You want to experience a safari far away from the busy tourist routes? Southern Tanzania might be just what you’re after. National parks like Nyerere and Ruaha offer vast untouched areas, diverse landscapes and excellent wildlife viewing with generally fewer safari vehicles.

From serene boat safaris along the waterways of Nyerere to thrilling game drives in Ruaha, the south is perfect if you crave a more remote and adventurous safari experience.

Best Time to Visit Tanzania’s National Parks

Wondering when to plan your Tanzania safari? The good news is that Tanzania offers great wildlife experiences throughout the year! The best time to visit depends on which national parks you’d like to explore and what you hope to see.

June to October: The dry season

The dry season is one of the most popular times for a Tanzania safari. With less vegetation and more animals meeting at waterholes, wildlife can be easier to spot. It’s a great time to discover parks like Tarangire, Ruaha and Nyerere. In the northern Serengeti, you might even witness dramatic river crossings during the Great Wildebeest Migration.

November to March: Green landscapes and newborn wildlife

The rains bring fresh greenery, beautiful scenery and plenty of wildlife activity. This is a particularly exciting period in the southern Serengeti, where every day thousands of wildebeest calves are born, usually between January and March. It’s also a wonderful time for birdwatching, with migratory species visiting many of Tanzania’s parks.

April to May: The long rains

April and May are generally the wettest months in much of Tanzania. Expect lush landscapes, fewer visitors and occasionally challenging road conditions. Some camps and lodges close temporarily, particularly in more remote areas, but certain parks remain accessible and can offer rewarding safari experiences.

So, when should you go? For classic dry-season game viewing, June to October is a great choice. But if you’re dreaming of green landscapes, fewer crowds or the wildebeest calving season, other months can be just as rewarding!
