Why go on a Tanzania safari?

What makes Tanzania special is its diversity in landscapes, wildlife, and culture. Home to the fascinating Maasai, the endless savanna plains are enveloped by rugged bushlands, towering mountains and ancient rainforests. Besides the (in)famous Big Five, you can marvel at the Great Wildebeest Migration all year round, and even hike to the summit of Kilimanjaro. And to top it all of, Zanzibar’s pristine beaches and turquoise waters are just a hop, skip, and a short flight away.

Tanzania’s National Parks

With a staggering 22 national parks, a Tanzania safari is bound to be nothing but exciting.

Northern Circuit

Tanzania’s Northern Circuit is the most popular safari route, taking you to the country’s most famous national parks.

  • Serengeti National Park – famous for the Great Wildebeest Migration and endless plains with cheetahs, elephants, lions and other stars of the Lion King.
  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area – centres on a volcanic caldera with one of the Africa’s densest concentrations of wildlife and your best bet to see all of the Big Five.
  • Tarangire National Park – known for its large elephant herds and ancient baobab trees.
  • Lake Manyara National Park – popular because of tree-climbing lions, the stunning soda lake and a fun treetop walk through the canopy of a forest.
  • Arusha National Park – small, scenic park near Arusha with Mount Meru, colobus monkeys, giraffes and the beautiful Momella Lakes.

Other Parks

Besides these safari hotspots, Tanzania wows with many other parks in the south and west that might be quieter or more remote, but just as scenic.

  • Nyerere National Park – one of Africa’s largest protected areas with hippos, crocodiles and the rare African wild dogs.
  • Ruaha National Park – rugged and remote with huge elephant and buffalo herds as well as the greater kudu and sable antelope.
  • Mikumi National Park – most accessible southern park, with open floodplains being home to giraffes, zebras, and elephants.
  • Katavi National Park – one of Tanzania’s wildest and least visited parks, known for hippos, crocodiles, and buffalo.

And should you want to see chimpanzees and other primates up close, either head to the Mahale Mountains or Gombe Stream National Park, where the late Jane Goodall started her groundbreaking research.

Tanzania tours

As a couple, a family, friends or solo: roam alongside the lions through Tanzania's most iconic parks and add some relaxation time in paradise.

Tanzania’s Wildlife

Imagine millions of hoofs thundering across the Serengeti, elephants bathing in the river, endless blue skies and a cheetah on the hunt: this is Tanzania, the best safari country in Africa.

Big Five

Lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, black rhinos: these five animals form the most sought after animal group in the world. While the black rhino is the hardest one to find, the others roam Tanzania’s plains frequently. Keep your eyes open and your cameras close for that billion dollar pic.

Great Wildebeest Migration

As one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, the Great Wildebeest Migration is the highlight of many Tanzania safaris. Since the animals move in a clockwise pattern, you can see this spectacle throughout the entire year – from the thrilling river crossings to the peak of calving season attracting hungry (and lazy) predators.

From the tiny lilac-breasted roller to the enormous ostrich, the more than 1,000 birds turn everyone into a bird lover.

Icons

Zebras, giraffes, various antelope species – we all know them from picture books, movies, and documentaries. In Tanzania, they become reality.

Rarities

If you’re lucky, you can even spot an African wild dog or the critically endangered pangolin. Keep your eyes open!

Tanzania’s diverse cultures

Home to more than 120 ethnic groups, Tanzania is one of the most culturally diverse countries worldwide. Besides the Hadzabe, Chaga and Nyamwezi, the Maasai are clearly the most famous tribe, but not the only ones you can visit during your Tanzania safari.

Visit the Iraqw

This fascinating tribe lives close to the Ngorongoro Conservation area. During a visit to their village, you can learn more about their everyday life, peek into their houses and listen to their stories about their history.

Visit the Maasai

Of course, you can also visit a traditional Maasai village during your Tanzania safari. How do they live today? Which traditions are kept alive? Find out for yourself and experience their customs first-hand during an unforgettable wedding ceremony.

Relax on Zanzibar Island

The perks of a Tanzania safari is that you can combine adventures in the bush with a beach holiday on Zanzibar or the surrounding islands like Pemba and Mafia. With white sandy beaches, colourful coral reefs and azure blue Indian Ocean, they’re the perfect settings to unwind. However, there’s much more to do…
