How to choose the right Kenya safari tour?

A safari in Kenya is no one size fits all, so there are certain questions you need to ask yourself as a first step in the planning process. Once answered, you have a great base for your personalized Kenya safari.

How much time do you have?

This determines how many parks you can visit, how close they should be to each other and whether a beach fits into the itinerary.

Which parks do you want to see?

Do you want to dive into the big stars like Amboseli and the Masai Mara or are you up for some remote gems like Samburu or Aberdare? This page gives you a clearer picture of what to expect in which park.

What kind of wildlife experience do you want?

  • Classic Big Five and big plains game -> Masai Mara
  • Elephants with Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop -> Amboseli
  • Birdlife and Rift Valley lakes -> Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha
  • Quieter, less-visited landscapes -> northern Kenya and conservancies
  • Great Migration -> the Masai Mara, roughly July to October

Do you want to combine safari and beach?

Many of our Kenya safari packages end with a few days on the coast, which is perfect for unwinding and reminiscing.

What accommodation level suits you?

Authentic tents in nature, cosy lodge or luxurious suites – your accommodations determine your level of comfort. Discover our Kenya accommodations and start dreaming.

What pace and structure do you prefer?

While some want to see as much as possible, others like to take their time to soak it all in.

Kenya safari routes and itineraries explained

Two safari tours in Kenya can have the same length and still feel completely different. The route is what makes the difference.

Rather than comparing tours by name, compare this:

  • How many nights are spent in each park?
  • How long the transfers between parks are?
  • Is the route a circuit or a straight line?
  • Does the trip include any flights?

Let’s have a look at the differences between itineraries.

  • Great migration masai mara drinking at the river

    Classic Masai Mara and Amboseli

You get Kenya’s best-known wildlife areas and two contrasting landscapes: open savannah in the Mara and wide plains below Kilimanjaro in Ambosel

  • Routes with Rift Valley lakes

Adding Lake Nakuru or Lake Naivasha brings in different scenery, plus birdlife and boat or walking activities, and usually breaks up the drive between the Mara and Amboseli

  • Three giraffes next to each other in Samburu National Reserve

    Longer routes with more parks

Ideal for travellers who want variety or a less crowded experience, and who are comfortable with more time on the road.

Kenya safari trips by duration

You don’t need to compare every itinerary day by day. The length of the trip mainly determines how many places you can see and how rushed it feels.

Short safaris (about 3 to 5 days)

Ideal if you have a limited schedule or if you want to get a first taste of safari. Most short Kenya safari tours only cover on one or two areas, so that you spend more time on game drives and less on transfers.

One-week safaris (about 6 to 8 days)

This is the most popular length for safari tours in Kenya. A week gives you enough time to explore two or three parks, with a good balance of wildlife and travel time. It’s also the shortest length that comfortably fits a beach extension.

Longer safaris (9 days and over)

Longer Kenya trips allow more parks, a slower pace and additional regions beyond the classic circuit. They’re ideal for return visitors, photographers, and anyone who wants to combine a full safari with a proper beach holiday.

Tip: more days don’t automatically mean more game viewing. Look at nights per park because that’s what gives you time in the wildlife areas.

Diani Beach Kenya (2)

Kenya safari plus a beach stay

A safari and beach holiday in Kenya is one of the most popular ways to travel – and there’s a good reason for it. Unwinding at beaches like Diani or Watamu add the cherry on the safari cake.

How it works

You start with a safari, then travel to the coast by domestic flight. Ideally, the beach days come at the end so that you can relax after early mornings and long game drives.

Perfect for…

  • Honeymoons or special occasions
  • Relaxing days after a busy safari
  • Downtime with your family
  • Making the most of your holiday

Duration of a beach stay

To fully enjoy the beautiful Kenyan beaches (and to explore some hidden gems) allow yourself at least 2 to 3 nights.
