The Zambezi Region is a narrow strip of land in north-eastern Namibia that stretches about 450 kilometres east towards the Zambezi River. Formerly known as the Caprivi Region, it was created during an 1890 agreement between Britain and Germany, with Germany hoping the corridor would provide a route to its East African colonies and the Indian Ocean. The plan failed when Victoria Falls and rapids further downstream made the Zambezi impossible to navigate to the sea, but the shape of the region remained. Today, the area is known for its rivers, wetlands and woodland, with the Okavango, Kwando, Linyanti/Chobe and Zambezi shaping its landscape and wildlife habitats. The region has three national parks, several community conservancies, and is home to elephants, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, sable, roan, red lechwe and around 450 bird species.

You could easily drive straight through Bwabwata National Park without realising it. The B8 towards Windhoek cuts right through this narrow strip of wilderness that is squeezed between Angola and Botswana. The Kwando and Kavango rivers shape its western and eastern edges, while the landscape is a far cry from Namibia’s classic desert scenery: think green floodplains, wetlands, woodland and plenty of water-loving wildlife. It’s also one of the country’s most interesting examples of people and wildlife sharing the same space, with local communities living and working alongside the animals. And what animals! Elephants use the park as a vital migration corridor between Angola and Botswana, while buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, lions, leopards, zebras and an impressive selection of antelope can all turn up. Of the Big Five, only rhino is missing from the line-up.

Mahango Game Reserve lies along the Okavango River near Divundu and is part of Bwabwata National Park. Its riverbanks, floodplains, grasslands and woodlands support elephants, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles and several antelope species, while more than 300 bird species have been recorded here. Wildlife viewing is strongest during the dry season from May to October, while the wet season brings migrant birds and greener landscapes.

Conservation plays a major role here, with more than 100 mammal species, including black and white rhinos and the endemic black-faced impala. You can explore through off-road game drives, guided walks and rhino tracking on foot, as well as birdwatching.
