Your guide to Jeffreys Bay

TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice

Welcome to South Africa’s surfing stronghold, with its world-famous breaks that draws even top surfers to its beaches. This is J-Bay, as the locals call it, or Jeffreys Bay as it’s officially called. Situated 80 kilometres (50 miles) west of Gqeberha (former Port Elizabeth) along the Eastern Cape coast, this town is shaped by its long, clean waves backed by wide dunes. The town moves at an easy pace, with its long beaches, dolphin sightings, and seasonal whale watching offshore. Try the waves, visit the Jeffreys Bay Shell Museum and enjoy fresh line-fish and calamari at restaurants like Kitchen Windows – all with views of the ocean and its superb surf breaks.

Surf breaks that legends are made of

At the heart of J-Bay is Supertubes, a world-famous break that draws top surfers to the annual World Surf League (WSL). But there are more areas around town with amazing surf breaks, boasting fascinating names such as Point, Kitchen Windows, Tubes, and Albatross. All deliver their own brand of magic, with fast-moving waves that can tower up to 4 meters (12 feet). Professional surfers schedule their calendars around these breaks and even non-surfers find themselves mesmerised watching riders carve through the water (it might just convince you to grab a board!).

Local food, crafts, and small surprises

Jeffreys Bay has a strong local scene with plenty to discover once you step off the sand. Surf Village is a good example – easygoing shops, shaded corners, and relaxed eateries where fresh seafood and local flavours keep you at the table longer than planned. You will also find small breweries, artisans crafting handmade leather goods, and a creative energy that makes each discovery feel like a small surprise.

The sand dunes

The massive dunes on the other side of town rival the surf breaks for thrills. Sandboarding here works like snowboarding, just warmer and sandier. Beginners start on gentle slopes while experienced riders tackle the steep gradients. The views from the top stretch across St Francis Bay – a coastal town 25 kilometres (16 miles) west of Jeffreys Bay. Lucky visitors also spot whales and dolphins playing below from June to December.
