Drive from Johannesburg to Graskop via Sabie River (Hazyview)

This is the start of your South African road trip – let’s leave the city behind and head straight for adventure! The drive from Johannesburg to Graskop takes 4.5 hours (or 380 kilometres), which leaves time to include a thrilling stop towards the end in Hazyview for some white water rafting on the Sabie River. It’s the perfect adrenaline kick to launch your journey. Once you've checked in at your Graskop hotel, the iconic Panorama Route is yours to explore.

: Graskop is a charming town in the Mpumalanga province, originally founded as a gold mining camp in the 1880s. Today, it’s a buzzing tourist hub and the perfect base for exploring the Panorama Route’s waterfalls, rock formations and epic viewpoints. Don’t forget to book the Graskop Viewing Lift – an unforgettable descent in a glass elevator, 51 metres downwards into an ancient forest. Between hikes and sightseeing, treat yourself to famous pancakes and coffees in one of the cosy cafés lining the main street. Once below, follow the 600-metre guided forest trail across bridges, rivers and past waterfalls in a lush, tranquil setting. The site also offers ziplining, cliff walks, a suspension bridge and the legendary Big Swing for thrill-seekers. Booking ahead is highly recommended!
: Craving an adrenaline rush? Go white water rafting on the Sabie River in Hazyview and let the current toss you around on your own one-person gecko or tube! You’ll navigate exciting rapids, cascades and meanders during this thrilling 6 to 7 kilometre ride. The Sabie River is one of the most biologically diverse rivers in the country, making the scenery just as epic as the action. Meet at the base on the R536 at least 15 minutes before your start time, where your experienced guide will brief you and shuttle you to the river. The activity lasts 3 hours, including 2.5 hours on the water - with plenty of chances to swim, bounce through rapids and even jump off rocks. All gear is included and no kids under 12 are allowed!

Take the Panorama Route from Graskop to Blyde River Canyon

The Panorama Route in Mpumalanga is a breathtaking drive that begins near Graskop and winds north along the R532 to the Blyde River Canyon and Echo Caves. The town is a vibrant base for adventure – think hot air ballooning, boat cruises and quad biking - and Kruger’s backyard, so make sure to keep an eye out for impala, kudu, or even a sneaky leopard to cross your path. Last but not least, this is where you can meet and greet Jessica the (tame!) Hippo.

On an average outing, you can spot five types of nudibranchs and flatworms, and 50 species of fish (think lionfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, rays and many more). Lucky snorkelers may even encounter turtles, octopus or cuttlefish. Daily guided tours are tide-dependent (book in advance!) and led by experts who know exactly where the fish feed and how to navigate safely around rip currents. Start your day in Hermanus with a wine-tasting plus lunch at Benguela Cove (from 10 AM to noon, to be booked at least 48 hours in advance), then stroll through town, visit the Whale House Museum, the Old Harbour and the Old Harbour Market with arts, clothing, jewellery and lots of restaurants and bars with yummy cuisine and marvellous ocean views. And of course, don't forget the highlight, which is the whale cruise or (land-based) walk that you can do from June to December, when Hermanus turns into the whale-watching capital of the world. From January to May, you can hike through the Fernkloof Reserve instead, and see magical forests and dramatic coastlines!

Activities:

: Hop on board at the New Harbour in Hermanus, hold your breath and get ready for big "whoas" when the first whale breaches right in front of you. You can get as close as 50 metres, even if the whales themselves sometimes come closer to you. Since they roam the sea between June and December, this activity is only available in those months at 10 AM and 1 PM daily. Once spotted, you spend 20 minutes next to a whale, with the entire experience lasting two hours. From January to May, as an alternative, you can dive into nature by hiking through the magnificent Fernkloof Nature Reserve.
: At an altitude as low as three metres, the Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate produces wines of the highest class on a 2.7 kilometre-long ocean-facing vineyard. Here you can join a Nature Walk and Wine Tasting Experience, available from Wednesdays to Sundays at 10 AM (and we need to book at least 2 days in advance!). During this two-hour guided walk, you discover the biodiversity of the 200-hectare estate. After the tour, you enjoy a wine tasting inside one of the tasteful rooms (pun intended) and a delicious lunch at the restaurant. And should you prefer not to walk, The Ultimate Benguela Cove Wine Experience (wine and lunch only!) is made for you.

: Tucked away on the R618 between Mtubatuba and St Lucia, Chané Cheese Farm is a charming lunch stop surrounded by lush pine forests. The farm-style restaurant serves up everything from burgers and pizzas to cheese platters and cakes, with a kiddies’ playground and mini golf to keep little ones happy. Take a fun cheese tour where you can milk a goat and learn how cheese is made, or saddle up for a scenic horse ride through the surrounding forest trails. Before you leave, pop into the farm shop for hand-made gifts and fresh cheeses. A wholesome, tasty outing for the whole family!

Day 14

Drive from Hermanus to Franschhoek

You can drive from Hermanus to Franschhoek directly after breakfast, or start your day with an early morning bird excursion on the Klein River that will (re)ignite your love for birds. Via the jaw-dropping Theewaterskloof Dam, you first reach Betty’s Bay after 50 minutes, where you can watch the penguin colony at Stony Point Nature Reserve. After another 1 hour and 20 minutes, you reach Franschhoek, a lovely 17th-century city with lots of wine and food (and you are there in time for lunch)!

: Tasting La Motte’s wines is like tasting heaven. From populars like the La Motte Sauvignon Blanc and the Cabernet Sauvignon to limited releases like the La Motte MCC and the premium Pierneef Collection with innovative blends, wines from this world-class vineyard have won prestigious awards and have even made the most critical connoisseurs blush. Look over the gardens or enjoy the ambience of the cellar and barrel maturation room while trying the house’s fine wines. This experience is possible from Tuesday to Sunday between 9 AM and 5 PM (closed during Christian holidays only).
: The total distance from St Lucia to King Shaka International Airport is 212 kilometres, so it shouldn't take more than 2.5 hours to reach your destination via the N2 highway towards Durban. Enjoy those last views of impressive coastal plains and wetlands. It's a relatively short drive so if you still have a few hours to spare, you might want to insert a quick visit to Durban (another 20 kilometres from the airport, but towards the other side) before you return your car and check in. Depending on which airline you booked your return flight with, you embark on the flight home immediately, or on a domestic flight towards Johannesburg first (as most transcontinental destinations are only served from O.R.Tambo International Airport).
