White sand beach surrounded by blue water and palm trees on Mafia Island, Tanzania

Mafia Island

Whether you're looking for a few adventurous days by the sea or some downtime after your safari, Mafia is small on crowds and big on unforgettable experiences. Here you can meet the world's biggest fish, get charmed by quaint coastal villages and get emotional during stunning sunsets. Chef's kiss!

TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice

Imagine swapping the sound of safari vehicles for gentle waves and the sight of lions for a glimpse of the world’s biggest fish. This is what you can do on Mafia Island, one of Tanzania’s most spectacular beach escapes on the Indian Ocean coast.

Life here moves at a wonderfully relaxed pace. You find fishing villages, mangrove-fringed shores and quiet beaches, but the real magic begins beneath the surface.

Marine life around Mafia Island

Step into the sea, and you quickly see why Mafia Island is a mecca for diving and snorkelling. The protected waters of Mafia Island Marine Park are home to coral gardens and tropical fish à la Finding Nemo. And at certain times of the year, the biggest puppies come along, when whale sharks pay the island’s western coast a much sought-after visit. Another highlight is the sea turtles, and the surrounding seagrass beds and mangrove forests help support an extraordinary mix of marine life.

Mafia Island Marine Park

This special place protects around 822 square kilometres of reefs, islands, lagoons, and coastal habitats. Chole Bay, on the island’s southeastern side, is one of the main areas for guided snorkelling and diving tours.

There’s more to the island than what you see underwater, though. Traditional fishing villages, coconut palms and peaceful coastal paths make exploring on land just as appealing.

Swimming with whale sharks on Mafia Island

Despite being the largest fish on Earth, whale sharks are surprisingly gentle (and vegetarian!). So you can imagine why swimming with whale sharks in the wild is a highlight for many who spend their holidays on Mafia Island.

Between roughly October and March, these graceful giants are more likely to be seen near the surface in the plankton-rich waters off Kilindoni Bay, on the western side of the island. And if you visit between late August and early October, you can also join a humpback whale watching tour for a chance to spot these magnificent giants of the ocean. We’re already crossing our fingers!

Activities on Mafia Island

From underwater adventures to laid-back island outings, there are plenty of things to do on Mafia Island. Pick your favourites and leave some space in the itinerary for doing absolutely nothing.

How to get to Mafia Island

Flying is usually the easiest option. Small aircraft connect the island with Dar es Salaam, with a flight time of roughly 30 to 45 minutes. Depending on the route and operating schedule, flights from Zanzibar or connections from safari areas may also be possible, sometimes via Dar es Salaam.

Mafia’s airport is near Kilindoni, and the onward transfer depends on where you stay. If you combine a Tanzania safari with a beach escape, flight schedules and transfer arrangements are worth planning together, so that the journey feels as relaxed as the island itself.

Best time to visit Mafia Island

There’s no single best month. The best time to visit Mafia Island solely depends on whether you come for the whale sharks, diving or simply a few blissfully slow days by the ocean.

June–September: Drier days and island exploring

These months are generally drier and a little breezier. It’s a lovely time for exploring the coast and planning marine activities. Snorkelling and diving sites still depend on wind and sea conditions, though.

October–March: Whale shark season

This is the main period for whale shark encounters near Kilindoni Bay. November to February is often especially promising, but since we’re still talking about nature, sightings are never guaranteed. Short rains can also occur during part of this period.

March–May: The long rains

Expect more frequent and sometimes heavy rain. Boat trips may be weather-dependent, and some accommodation and activity providers operate on reduced schedules.

Planning tip: If swimming near whale sharks is your main reason for visiting, build in several nights rather than relying on a single excursion day.

Climate on Mafia Island

Mafia Island has a warm tropical climate throughout the year. The weather is influenced by the Indian Ocean, with a generally drier period from June to October. Around November and December shorter rains take over, and the main rainy season usually falls in March to May.

The sea is a big part of life here, but the best conditions for diving, snorkelling and boat trips can vary by season, wind and individual site. It’s worth choosing your travel dates around your favourite activity, rather than the weather alone.

Where to stay on Mafia Island

Most visitors go for a small lodge or cosy beach accommodation instead of a large resort.

The Utende and Chole Bay area is a convenient base for snorkelling, diving and exploring the marine park. Staying closer to Kilindoni on the western coast can be useful if a whale shark excursion is high on your wish list.
