5 Questions With… Lian

1. What’s your name, where are you from, and what’s your role at Africa Safari Trips?

Hi, I’m Lian — half German, half Dutch, and currently living in beautiful South Africa. I first came here during a volunteering experience, and what started as a short-term journey turned into something much more meaningful. I now live here with my husband Pieter and our son, and we love exploring more of this country every day. At Africa Safari Trips, I’m part of the German sales team and also help design routes that showcase South Africa’s most unique highlights for our travelers.

2. What’s your favorite destination in South Africa and why?

Out of all the incredible places in South Africa, Knysna has completely stolen my heart. There’s something magical about the atmosphere there — the people are warm and welcoming, the beaches are stunning, and there’s always something to do. Whether it’s hiking in nature, tasting fresh seafood, or simply soaking up the views, Knysna feels like home and carries a lot of personal meaning for me. The Garden Route as a whole is a dream destination, combining beaches, forests, and wildlife. And with Addo Elephant Park nearby, you even have the Big Five within reach.

3. Which safari experience would you recommend to someone visiting for the first time?

If it’s your first safari, the legendary Kruger National Park is a must — it’s the ultimate Big Five destination. But as I mentioned earlier, Addo Elephant Park is another fantastic option with its wide open landscapes and amazing elephant sightings. For those seeking a little extra comfort and exclusivity, private game reserves are an unforgettable choice, offering more personalized service and luxury touches.

4. What’s the most unforgettable wildlife moment you’ve had?

One of my most memorable wildlife encounters was when my family from Germany visited South Africa for the first time. We were self-driving through Addo Elephant Park when suddenly, an elephant walked right up to our car and gently put its trunk inside. It was such a breathtaking moment — so close and personal with nature. Another unforgettable experience happened as we were leaving Kruger National Park: we came across a hyena family with five playful cubs tumbling around on the road. Watching them up close was pure magic.

5. Is there a destination in South Africa you haven’t been to yet but would love to explore one day?

I feel privileged to have seen so much of this incredible country already. But I’d love to explore the West Coast and desert regions next. The idea of vast desert landscapes, unique wildlife like springbok, and unforgettable sunsets makes it high on my list.

Bonus: What’s one tip you always share with guests before they travel to South Africa?

South Africa has so much to offer, so my number one tip is: take your time. Don’t rush through it — give yourself enough days to truly experience the country. From safaris to coastlines, every region has its own magic. And like with any destination, stay aware of your surroundings and follow local advice. With just a few basic precautions, you’ll have a safe and unforgettable journey.

: The best time to visit South Africa depends on your interests! For safaris, May to September is ideal for game viewing in Kruger National Park and other savanna regions, offering clear skies and excellent wildlife sightings.

However, if you prefer warmer weather and lush landscapes, December to February is perfect for experiencing the summer season with opportunities to see newborn animals.

Cape Town and the Garden Route shine from September to April, offering sunny days, outdoor adventures, and peak whale watching from July to August.

For a mix of both safari and coastal experiences, September and October are your best bet, combining ideal conditions with fewer crowds and lower prices.
