The Lumo Conservancy is located between Tsavo West National Park and the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s as small as 195 square kilometres, was established in 2001 and is managed by the community. Since it’s not an official national park, unique game drives are possible here – even at night! It’s also an important corridor for wildlife migrating between Tsavo East and Tsavo West and Mkomazi National Park in Tanzania. The name “LUMO” is an acronym for the communities of Lualenyi, Mramba, and Oza which gave land to establish the conservancy.

Night game drive
A special activity in Lumo is a night game drive. After the sun has set on the horizon, you set off on an unforgettable experience: in a 4×4 safari jeep with extremely good lights you go on the search for nocturnal animals like genets, porcupines, galagos or aardvarks. With a little bit of luck you might be able to watch predators like lions, leopards or hyenas on the hunt – but even if you don’t get to witness this spectacle, a night game drive will give you goose bumps for sure!
How to get there
Lumo is located about 200 kilometres from Mombasa. From Nairobi the distance is 360 kilometres and from Voi, the larger town near Tsavo East, it’s 50 kilometres. The nearest airstrip is Taita Hills Airstrip.
Climate
Lumo Conservancy offers a good year-round destination. There is a big rainy season in April and May, and a small rainy season in November and December.
Best time to visit Lumo Conservancy
We recommend visiting Lumo Conservancy in the dry season between June and November or between January and March. Due to the close location to the equator there are hardly any temperature differences.
