5 Questions with… Quentin

1. What’s your name, where are you from, and what’s your role at Africa Safari Trips?

My name is Quentin, and I’m from Uganda. I grew up in Kampala and now live in Entebbe, known as the gateway to the “Pearl of Africa”. I have a deep love for my country due to its endless opportunities for adventure and discovery. This love makes me want to explore every corner of Uganda, from the summit of Margherita Peak – the nation’s highest point – down to the Albert Delta, its lowest. At Africa Safari Trips, I work as a tour consultant, supporting our sales team by providing expert travel advice and recommending suitable activities. My goal is to design and deliver the best safari experiences for our guests.

2. What’s your favourite destination in Uganda and why?

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is where my passion for hiking was born. So far, I have stood on two volcanic peaks – Mount Sabyinyo (3,669m) and Mount Muhabura (4,127m) – and I’m already looking forward to climbing my third, Mount Gahinga (3,474m)… and to returning to Sabyinyo and Muhabura. The park is not just a paradise for hiking fans, but also a vital habitat for Uganda’s most iconic animal: the endangered Mountain Gorilla.

The entire conservation area, including Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is incredibly scenic, with its rolling hills, deep valleys, and ancient lava-dammed lakes. It doesn’t come as a surprise that this stunning landscape inspired Winston Churchill to call Uganda the “Pearl of Africa”.

3. Which safari experience would you recommend to someone visiting for the first time?

For gorilla trekking, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is unbeatable. Murchison Falls National Park is home to the “World’s Most Powerful Waterfall” and an absolute must-visit – also because it’s home to four of the iconic Big Five: lions, African buffalo, savanna elephants, and leopards. A stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary along the way completes the set, giving visitors the chance to see the magnificent white rhino and experience the full Big Five in one trip.

A visit to the Top of the Falls is unforgettable. Here, you witness the Nile, the world’s longest river, force its entire might through a narrow gorge just seven metres wide before plunging into the Albertine Rift. If you’re interested in culture and want to feel a deeper connection to Uganda’s heritage, I highly recommend visiting the Karamojong people of northeastern Uganda and the Batwa – the earliest inhabitants of East Africa’s Great Lakes region who now live around Bwindi and Mgahinga.

My recommended route begins in Entebbe, moving to Murchison Falls, then south through Kibale National Park (for chimpanzee trekking), Queen Elizabeth National Park (for tree-climbing lions and boat safaris), and the Bwindi-Mgahinga region for adventure. The journey can end with relaxation at either Lake Bunyonyi or Lake Mburo National Park before returning to Entebbe.

Quentin’s Favourite Activities

Whether getting eye to eye with elusive (and huge) animals, discovering the country on foot or two wheels, or even rafting: Quentin’s favourite activities induce a rush of adrenaline.

4. What’s the most unforgettable wildlife moment you’ve had?

I remember that moment as if it were yesterday. During a group hike in Mgahinga, as we were descending the mountain, we encountered a forest elephant with her calf grazing on the foothills near the trail. The elephant noticed us and suddenly charged. Our lead guide immediately instructed us to sit down and remain completely silent while we waited for a UWA ranger from another group (still higher on the mountain) to come and safely redirect the elephant. Exhausted and terrified, we stayed perfectly still. Despite the fear, the experience was deeply thrilling and unforgettable. Adding a lighter note to that same day, another subgroup spotted a duiker in the forest and excitedly called it a “dog”. It was a funny moment that made the entire adventure even more memorable and fun. On a different trip, I camped near the Tangi Gate in Murchison Falls. At night, buffalo came into our camp. We could hear them breathing and grunting in the dark. It was a little scary, but it reminded me that we were right in the middle of the wild.

5. Is there a destination in Uganda you haven’t been to yet but would love to explore one day?

I’ve explored Uganda’s western circuit, including Murchison, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi, Mgahinga, and Lake Mburo, and also the vast plains of Moroto in the northeast. Still on my list is Kidepo Valley National Park, famous for its authentic Karamojong culture, striking landscapes, and remarkable wildlife, especially its enormous buffalo herds. Of course, another dream destination is Margherita Peak, where you can go snow hiking and see Africa’s last remaining glacier.

Bonus: What’s one tip you always share with guests before they travel to Uganda?

Uganda has pleasant weather all year, but the evenings can be cool. Since the national parks are often five hours apart, you should wear clothes that are both comfortable and useful. It’s always best to wear neutral colours on a safari, and this is also true for Uganda. Wearing layers is important, too. You can take them off if you get warm from activities like trekking, or put them on if you get cold.
