Day 1

Arrival at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg

Welcome to South Africa, nayimkelekile, baie welkom! As you walk out of O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg – Africa’s biggest and busiest airport – you head straight to your rental car pick-up place. This is where your adventure begins! Day 2

Johannesburg

Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and its financial and industrial capital. Full of contrasts and visible scars from its Apartheid history, it has developed into a buzzing city with a wealth of art, history, shopping, and a dynamic nightlife. Visit the 81-hectare Botanical Garden, the sprawling Soweto township (once home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu), and the Maboneng district (place of light) – one of the most renowned creative districts in the world with amazing street art. A visit to Johannesburg is a moving discovery, that will help you to better apprehend the history of South Africa.

Day 3

Drive to Winterton in central Drakensberg

Time to swap city buzz for fresh mountain air! The drive from Johannesburg to the charming town of Winterton, gateway to the central part of the Drakensberg, takes just under 4 hours (375 kilometres via the N3 and R74). The Drakensberg is South Africa’s mightiest mountain range that stretches over 1,125 kilometres and towers up to 3,482 metres. Winterton, nestled in its foothills, is a historic pioneer town and a popular base for hikes. This central region is defined by the dramatic Champagne, Cathedral, and Cathkin peaks, offering top trails, trout and bass fishing, and fascinating San rock art. Take time to explore the local museums and monuments before heading further south toward Underberg.

Hike in the Drakensberg Mountains

The Drakensberg, South Africa’s highest mountain range, is a hiker’s paradise of rolling grasslands, towering waterfalls, and dramatic cliffs, with nearly 940 square miles recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its valleys echo with the calls of baboons, and its caves hold over 35,000 ancient San rock paintings, making it one of the world’s greatest outdoor art galleries. The views? Simply breathtaking. With dozens of trails spread across the northern, central and southern Drakensberg, there’s a hike for everyone – from easy rambles to all-day treks. Most hotels provide trail maps and transfers to the starting point, and you can find detailed routes, guided options and expert advice online.

Day 6 - 7

Drive to Underberg in southern Drakensberg

The scenic drive from Winterton to Underberg takes 2 hours and 45 minutes (230 kilometres) via the N3 and R617. Leave after breakfast for a relaxed afternoon in Underberg, or enjoy one last hike before packing up. Nestled in the foothills of southern Drakensberg, Underberg is the gateway to the Sani Pass and Lesotho and any nature lover's paradise with lush farmland, winding rivers and the dramatic peaks of Giant’s Cup. In winter (June to August), the area often turns into a snowy wonderland. Breathe in the crisp air, soak up the sunshine and unwind with a drink in one of Underberg’s cosy pubs and restaurants.

Day 8 - 10

Drive from southern Drakensberg to the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve

Get ready for a longer drive today – but your destination makes it worth the effort! The most direct route from Underberg to the Hluhluwe iMflolozi Game Reserve takes just over five hours (465 kilometres), taking you north via Pietermaritzburg and then along the N2. Your reward? Big Five sightings in one of South Africa’s oldest and most storied game reserves. Once a royal hunting ground for Zulu kings and home to Stone Age settlements, this reserve is rich in both wildlife and history, with plenty of rhinos as your icing on the cake!

Day 11 - 13

Saint Lucia

The coastal town of St Lucia in KwaZulu-Natal is surrounded by the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and is a nature lover’s paradise. Think wild coastal forests, golden beaches, abundant birdlife, and free-roaming hippos - yes, they stroll the streets at night! Add to that year-round tropical weather, warm Indian Ocean waters, and an unbeatable mix of adventure and relaxation, and you’ll want to stay longer than just a day. Snorkel at Cape Vidal, cruise with crocs and hippos on the estuary, or even milk a goat at a local cheese farm. St Lucia is wild, wonderful, and waiting!

Day 14

Flight home from Durban

All good things come to an end. It's time to catch your flight home from King Shaka International Airport in Durban.
Sad to leave…? Not to worry! You can still hop on a domestic flight to Cape Town and add a few highlights to your holiday. How about exploring (and tasting) world-class wines, standing on top of Table Mountain and diving into the rich history of the country?
