South Africa offers a unique hiking experience. From the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains to the Western Cape coastlines, there’s a trail for every adventurer, from seasoned to casual hikers.

Here are a few of our favorites to get you started.

Top Hiking Trails Across South Africa’s Most Scenic Regions

Drakensberg Mountains

Top Trails:

  • Sterkspruit Meander: A short 2.3km moderate hike near Champagne Castle is a small but scenic reserve on the Long Tom Pass. You’ll find everything from tranquil walks and trout fishing spots to game viewing. This short trail has a sharp descent and the opportunity to take in the impressive waterfalls from the lookout deck. Before tackling the ascent on your return you could take an icy dip in the river pool.
  • Tugela Gorge Trail: This challenging 13.5km trail takes you to one of Drakensberg Park’s greatest wonders, the Amphitheatre which is three times larger than Yosemite’s famous El Capitan! You’ll be treated to the breathtaking Tugela Falls, the second-highest waterfall in the world. Expect some rock bouldering and chain ladder scrambling, it’s a hike that gets the adrenaline pumping, but the rewards are worth it.
  • Gray’s Pass: A challenging but short 2.3km hike, often described as a great gain for little pain, and is situated in the Monk’s Cowl area. While a popular trail for camping and hiking, it can still be done without having to pitch a tent if you start early.

From the majestic mountains of the Drakensberg to the coastal beauty of Cape Town, South Africa’s trails are diverse and breathtaking.

Cape Town

From the iconic Table Mountain to the cape coastline. A vibrant city that offers a trail to explore the best of the Cape Peninsula, suitable to every fitness level.

Top Trails:

  • Lion’s Head Summit: On everyone’s to-do list while visiting Cape Town, and for good reason! This 4.5km hike gives you those Insta-worthy snaps. It’s a bit of a climb and can get pretty busy during peak season (November – February) but worth it for the amazing 360-degree views of the city.
  • Chapman’s Peak Summit: A moderate 5km trail in Hout Bay that will reward you with panoramic views of the Cape Peninsula and the iconic Chapman’s Peak Drive. Make sure to take in the indigenous fynbos but keep an eye on the sky as you may spot a black eagle or fish eagle.
  • Cecilia Forest via Cecelia Stream: This moderately challenging 5km trail makes for a peaceful outing. While this loop meanders through beautiful trees and streams of the Cecelia First, it doesn’t lead directly to the Waterfall. For a more challenging hike, follow the stream to the falls, but watch your step, it can be slippery when it rains.
  • Skeleton Gorge: A 5.3km thrilling climb that takes you up the back of Table Mountain. With rocky steps, steep climbs, and a ladder ascent through the lush forest makes for a fun hike. Make sure to check the weather before heading out and pack a few layers in case the temperature drops when you reach the top.

Next, head east along the lush Garden Route for coastal hiking adventures.
