The 81-hectare Johannesburg Botanical Garden is one of the city’s most beloved green lungs, offering peaceful lawns, shady trees and scenic views over the historic Emmarentia Dam. Once a sports field in the late 1960s, it now features themed rose, herb and succulent gardens, ideal for a leisurely stroll and a break from big city life. The rose garden is a true highlight, with over 4,500 different rose hybrids cascading over seven terraces framed by Japanese flowering cherries – simply stunning in spring. Don’t miss the herb garden either, where you’ll find both classic culinary herbs and traditional African medicinal plants. The gardens are open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM.
