Just five kilometres outside Pretoria, Groenkloof Nature Reserve is the perfect city escape. Spanning over 600 hectares, it’s South Africa’s first official nature reserve, dating back to 1895. Three well-marked trails (ranging between 3.5 and 10.5 kilometres) guide you through rugged hills, offering panoramic views and chances to spot giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, kudus, and more. The reserve is open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM, with weekday visitors entering via Fountains Valley, while weekend hikers use the second gate, 800 metres further. Entry is dirt cheap, card-only, and you’ll receive a trail map upon arrival. The yellow route is the longest and most scenic one, known for its tougher terrain – a workout with some wildlife on the side!
