The Groenkloof Nature Reserve, just five kilometres outside Pretoria, is Africa’s very first game sanctuary and still a beloved green escape for locals. Set within 600 hectares of bushveld, it’s ideal for self-drives, picnics, hiking, or tackling the rugged 14-kilometre 4×4 route. The reserve is teeming with wildlife, from zebra and giraffe to kudu, jackals, ostriches, and blesbok – all fairly relaxed around vehicles, so you can often get surprisingly close. The circular 4×4 trail features steep climbs, rocky descents, and muddy water crossings – you might even splash past a giraffe! No guide needed, just a spirit of exploration and a bit of grit.
